It is a District General Hospital with a 24-hour Accident and Emergency department.

What happened at Croydon University Hospital?
A woman has been taken to hospital after ingesting a possible hazardous substance at a property in Thornton Heath. Two officers were exposed to the substance. They remain at the hospital under observation. Ambulances and emergency vehicles are being given access to the hospital throughout the incident response.
Why is Croydon Hospital called Mayday?
The hospital's roots are as the infirmary of the Croydon Workhouse opened in Mayday Road by the Rt. Rev. Edward Benson, Archbishop of Canterbury, in May 1885.
