Liverpool is a city located in the North West of England, situated on the estuary of the River Mersey that opens out into the Irish Sea. Liverpool became a borough in 1207, founded by King John, and a city in 1880.

Capitalising on the popularity of 1960s rock groups, such as the Beatles, as well as the city's world-class art galleries, museums and landmarks, tourism and culture have become a significant factor in Liverpool's economy.

Liverpool is a walkable city centre, with great transport links including Merseyrail underground linking Lime Street to the Waterfront and further afield.

The history of Liverpool can be traced back to 1190 when the place was known as 'Liuerpul', possibly meaning a pool or creek with muddy water, though other origins of the name have been suggested.
